Preventive & Pediatric Dental Treatments
- Dental Check-Ups & Cleanings
A dental check-up typically consists of an examination of your child’s teeth, a professional dental cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and a set of dental X-rays depending on your child’s needs. Routine dental check-ups will help prevent serious dental problems and will keep your child’s teeth healthy and beautiful.
- Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride treatments help strengthen your child’s teeth and prevent cavities. Many dental hygiene products such as toothpastes and mouthwashes, as well as public drinking water systems including New York City, contain fluoride. If your child is at high risk for caries development, additional fluoride supplements may be recommended.
- Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the grooves of the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to protect the teeth from tooth decay. Most tooth decay in children and teens occurs on these surfaces. Dental sealants protect the chewing surfaces from tooth decay by keeping germs and food particles out of these grooves. The application of sealants usually does not require removing any tooth structure or the use of a local anesthetic.
- Laser Dentistry
Our dental laser uses laser-energized water to treat affected tissue instead of a traditional dental drill. By eliminating the vibration and heat associated with the dental drill, many dental procedures can be performed comfortably with minimal to no anesthesia. Our laser can also reduce the symptoms and healing times associated with many soft tissue conditions.
- Dental Fillings
A dental filling is a dental restorative material used to restore the function, integrity, and morphology of missing tooth structures caused by caries or fractures. Some of the most common materials used for dental restorations include silver amalgams, composite resins or white fillings, and porcelain. We will be happy to discuss which material is best suited for your child.
- Stainless Steel & Resin-based Crowns
A stainless steel crown (SSC) is a preformed metal crown used for the restoration of severely decayed baby teeth or teeth that have undergone pulp treatment/root canal. They are extremely durable, relatively inexpensive, subject to minimal technique sensitivity during placement, and offer the advantage of full tooth coverage. They have a very high success rate compared to other restorative materials and may never have to be replaced before the tooth falls out.
- Pulp Therapy
The pulp of your child’s tooth is the inner central core of the tooth. If the dental pulp of your child’s tooth becomes exposed via caries or traumatic injury, a dental infection and toothache may develop. If left untreated, the infected pulp may worsen and lead to tooth loss. Partial or complete removal of the infected pulp may be needed to alleviate discomfort and preserve the tooth.
- Dental Extractions
Some dental conditions may require the extraction or removal of one or more of your child’s teeth. When you and your child visit Kids Dental Studio for an extraction appointment, you can take comfort in knowing that our doctors will take the time to explain the treatment in a child-friendly manner to help make the experience as comfortable and pleasant as possible. Once a tooth has been removed, neighboring teeth may shift causing problems with alignment. To avoid these complications our doctors may recommend a space maintainer or other options.
- Space Maintainers
A baby tooth is sometimes lost prematurely because of tooth decay or injury. If this occurs before the permanent tooth is ready to erupt, the nearby teeth could shift into the space where the adult tooth is supposed to erupt. This can lead to a lack of space in the jaw for the permanent teeth. A space maintainer can be placed so that the teeth do not shift and the space can be held open for the permanent tooth to erupt in the correct position. Space maintainers are usually fitted in children when they lose their baby teeth early.
- Custom Athletic Mouthguards & Nightguards
Mouthguards and nightguards help protect and preserve your child’s teeth. Our doctors can create a custom-fitted plastic mouthguard to protect your child’s teeth and gums from sports-related injuries or a custom-fitted nightguard to protect his or her teeth from the effects of night-grinding.
- Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is a sweet-smelling, colorless blend of gases. When nitrous oxide is inhaled, it can create a feeling of happiness and relaxation in most patients. Some patients even describe feelings of silliness, which is why nitrous oxide is also called “laughing gas.” Nitrous oxide is a safe and comfortable way to help many children receive the dental treatments they need.
Orthodontic Services
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children should visit the orthodontist at around age seven for an initial evaluation. At Kids Dental Studio, we offer the highest quality orthodontic care for children and teens. It is our goal to give your child a straight and beautiful smile that he or she will be proud to show off!
Orthodontic Treatments in Our Office
- Interceptive Orthodontic Treatment
In younger children, interceptive orthodontic treatment helps guide the growth and development of teeth and jaws. With the use of special orthodontic appliances, we can influence growth of the jaws when there is a disharmony, maintain or regain space for unerupted adult teeth, improve the alignment of teeth, and correct certain oral habits. Early orthodontic treatment can help minimize or even eliminate the need for more costly orthodontic procedures in the future.
- Comprehensive Orthodontic Treatment
Comprehensive orthodontic treatment generally uses either metal or ceramic braces.
Metal braces are made from high-quality stainless steel and are more durable. Modern metal braces are much smaller in size and therefore more comfortable to wear. They are especially popular among children because they can change the color of the elastic ties at every visit which makes wearing braces more fun.
Ceramic braces are made from tooth-colored composite and therefore much less visible. It is a great treatment option for patients where esthetics is a concern.
- Invisalign®
Invisalign® is a treatment option offered to teens and adults so that they can get the straight smile they want without having to wear braces and wires. Invisalign uses a series of clear custom-made aligners that are changed approximately every two weeks to gently and gradually reposition your child’s teeth. The best part about Invisalign is that your child can remove the aligners to eat their favorite foods and to brush their teeth.
